Welsh councils compensated for snow costs

The Welsh Government has approved £2.5m in funding to offset costs incurred by councils during recent snowfall.

The funding will compensate authorities for much of their spending on gritting, snow clearance operations and salt purchasing.

Ken Skates, the Welsh government’s economy and transport secretary,  said: “As much of the country was blanketed with snow recently, authority staff and contractors worked tirelessly in supporting the travelling public and ensuring our road network remained open as much as possible.

“Their professionalism and commitment was evident as ever and I would like to thank them once again for their efforts. The extreme weather did have an impact, however, and with that came inevitable financial consequences.”

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
