Scottish councils share £7.5m from Crown revenue

A £7.5m cash windfall from the Crown Estates is set to help 26 Scottish councils.

The money is being shared from revenues raised by the Crown Estate’s marine revenue. It owns half the shores around Scotland including 5,800 moorings and all of the seabed out to 12 nautical miles.

Shetland Islands Council is to receive £1m with Aberdeenshire taking in £328,000. Aberdeen City Council will get £30,000.

Shetland Islands Council leader Steven Coutts said: “The ability for our communities to benefit from the income that’s generated from marine assets around the islands has been a long-standing political objective for the council.”

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
