Northumberland pursues academy chain for cash repayment

Northumberland County Council is pursuing an academy chain for the repayment of £230,000 after it pulled out of running a school in Hexham. According to Local Government Lawyer, the county has confirmed that the authority’s legal services department is writing to the Department for Education about the issue.

According to a report in Schools Week, Bright Tribe was paid to convert Haydon Bridge High School in Northumberland but abandoned it last November blaming the school’s deficit and low pupil numbers.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
