NHS trusts launch legal bid for business rate relief

A group of 20 NHS hospital trusts have issued proceedings against 49 local authorities, seeking business rates relief. The trusts seek the right to be given 80% relief on their rates bills, bringing them in line with private hospitals, which count as charities. A preliminary hearing in the case, which could cost the councils £300m a year, was due to be heard today.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
