Midlands LGPS merger gets the green light

The proposed merger of West Midlands Integrated Transport Authority Pension Fund and West Midlands Pension Fund has been signed off by the government.

The funds maintained by the West Midlands Combined Authority and the City of Wolverhampton Council will proceed once regulations have been changed.

The effective date of the merger has been changed to 1 April 2019. To achieve this, the assets and liabilities of West Midlands Travel Ltd will be subsumed into the combined authority’s section of the main West Midlands Pension Fund.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
