Government to reinstate ban on LGPS political boycotts

The government will reinstate guidance to prevent councils adopting investment policies that it considers contrary to UK foreign or defence policy.

The announcement comes after the Palestine Solidarity Campaign (PSC) failed to overturn proposed government guidance stopping local councils from boycotting Israel.

In a written parliamentary answer, local government minister Rishi Sunak said: “Following the Government’s success at the Court of Appeal, pending the conclusion of any further legal proceedings, I intend to reinstate the guidance provided to Local Government Pension Scheme administering authorities requiring that they should not pursue investment policies that are contrary to UK foreign policy or UK defence policy.”

The adoption of artificial intelligence in local government could be just as much about maximising available resources – essentially doing more with less – as it is about making immediate financial savings or efficiencies.
