Councils urged to bid for £10m for new towns

Councils hoping to develop new towns have been urged to bid for government cash to fund their planning.

Housing secretary Robert Jenrick announced the competition to enable councils to create plans for large-scale developments similar to the Ebbsfleet project in Kent.

Sir George Iacobescu, who completed Canary Wharf, will decide which projects will get the money.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
