Councillors drop plans for income-raising hotel

A £16m proposal to build a hotel to raise income for a Somerset council has been kicked into touch after Liberal Democrats took charge.

According to a report on the SomersetLive website, Somerset West and Taunton Council’s new Liberal Democrat administration is set to drop the plans.

The plans had been brought forward by the previous Conservative regime at Taunton Deane Borough Council, which has now merged with West Somerset Council.

According to the report, the council’s new portfolio holder for economic development, Habib Farbahi, told a meeting of the council: “With immediate effect we are going to drop the Firepool hotel venture.

“I do not believe in playing Monopoly with taxpayers’ money. That is dead – finished.”

The decision is set to be formally ratified at a meeting of the full council in June.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
