Committee chair urges government to publish post-Brexit plans

A Parliamentary select committee chair has voiced alarm at the government’s continuing failure to publish plans for the replacement of EU structural funding following Brexit.

In April, the Housing, Communities and Local Government Select Committee called on the government to urgently publish its plans for the Shared Prosperity Fund, the proposed post-Brexit replacement for European Union structural funding, according to MPs.

Committee chair this week wrote to housing secretary James Brokenshire urging him to give councils greater clarity on the issue.

Betts said: “Our evidence was clear that the plans for the establishment of the SPF must happen as soon as possible. We asked for the publication of the promised consultation design and administration within two weeks from 12 April, which was two months ago.

“We hope that you will reconsider how urgent this issue is for local governments and not allow any further delays to either the consultation or the creation of the fund.”

Betts also raised concerns that a delay to the forthcoming Spending Review would harm local authorities’ ability to make effective plans for after 2020.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
