Business support for more council powers over housing and infrastructure

A majority of businesses in London support giving councils more powers and funding to deliver housing and infrastructure.

Research conducted on behalf of London Councils and the London Chamber of Commerce and Industry found 80% support more freedom to fund and build infrastructure, while 78% support it for new housing.

Clare Coghill, London Councils’ executive member for Business, Europe and Good Growth, said: “These findings highlight the importance of London local government in delivering much-needed homes and infrastructure, which are crucial to businesses and their staff and therefore play a role in supporting London’s economy.

“Getting more freedoms from central government is increasingly important, as making progress with housing and infrastructure projects will become even more challenging in light of the recent increase in Public Works Loan Board borrowing costs.”

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
