£100m for councils to mend potholes

The Department of Transport has allocated £100m to repair potholes and other damage to roads caused by storm damage. The money is on top of £75m already distributed through the Pothole Action Fund earlier this year. Transport secretary Chris Grayling said: “People rely on good roads to get to work and to see friends or family. We have seen an unusually prolonged spell of freezing weather which has caused damage to our local roads.”

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
