More than 100 council finance officers have already signed up for Room151’s annual conference – set to be held just weeks before the UK’s departure from the European Union.
The gathering of local government finance experts at the 2019 Local Authority Treasurers Investment Forum (LATIF) & FDs’ Summit will be held on 19 September – just six weeks before the UK’s current leaving date.

The implications of Brexit will be a major theme at the 2019 conference which will be held at the London Stock Exchange on September 19th.
John Kelly, client director at investment manager CCLA, which is the lead sponsor of the conference, said: “With Brexit on the horizon, uncertainty in the market, and interest rates forecast to remain lower for longer, council treasurers can use September 19th to gain some vital market intelligence as well as benchmark their strategies with colleagues from other authorities.

Room151 this week unveiled the initial speaker line-up for the conference which comprises two streams, one for council cash managers (LATIF) and a summit for section 151 officers (FDs’ Summit).
Peter Hugh Smith, CCLA’s new chief executive, will make a keynote presentation to the LATIF audience covering the impact of Brexit on council treasury investors.
Another session at LATIF is set to see private sector investment managers discuss the impact of the UK’s departure on interest rates and the macro economic outlook.
Elsewhere, a group of local government practitioners will cover topics including borrowing to invest, inter-authority loans and reserves strategies.
CIPFA chief executive Rob Whiteman will be speaking at the FDs’ Summit on the potential impact of funding and spending reviews on council resilience alongside the Society of London Treasurers’ president Caroline Holland, and the Manchester and Birmingham section 151 officers, Carol Culley and Clive Heaphy.
Other sessions on the summit will cover, commercialisation, MRP strategy, the affordability of the LGPS and income inequality.
Christian Wall, director of local authority financial adviser PFM, the FDs’ summit stream sponsor, will mull the question of whether local authority external audit is broken.
