GMB balloting 100,000 council workers over pay offer

More than 100,000 local government workers are being balloted by the GMB on the pay offer proposed by the National Joint Council last month.

The ballot opened on 22 August and will close on 21 October.

Workers including carers, school staff, social workers, refuse collectors are set to vote on the £1,925 flat-rate proposed settlement from the local government employers. The increase is worth 10.5% for the lowest-paid staff, falling to 4.04% for high earners.

“These workers kept our vital institutions running during the pandemic. Like the rest of us, they’re on the brink of poverty thanks to the crushing cost-of-living crisis,” said Rachel Harrison, GMB national officer.

“Any real-terms pay cuts risk deepening the staffing crisis, but it’s for our members to decide whether thy want to accept this offer.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
