UNISON warns of LGPS risk from pension reforms

Britain’s biggest public sector union has warned against creating opt-outs from local government pension funds.

The government is consulting on plans to offer further education and sixth form colleges plus former polytechnics the option of opting out of LGPS schemes in England.

Jon Richards, vice chair of the LGPS advisory board, warned the proposals “could damage cash flow for a number of LGPS funds, affecting workers in local government and services far beyond further and higher education”.
