Joanne Donnelly to become secretary to the LGPS Advisory Board

The Local Government Association has confirmed that Joanne Donnelly will succeed Jeff Houston as LGA head of pensions and secretary of the LGPS Advisory Board in England and Wales.

Donnelly will take up the role on 1 April 2022. She will represent the interests of local authorities to government and other stakeholders, including trade unions, in relation to the governance, administration, funding and investment approaches of local government pension funds.

“I am very happy to have been appointed to the head of pensions role and am looking forward to it,” Donnelly told Room151.

“There’s some trepidation too, of course, as Jeff is a very hard act to follow. I look forward to continuing to build my knowledge of, and relationships in, the local government pensions sector and leading the excellent pensions team at the LGA who support local government employers across the LGPS as well as the firefighters’, teachers’ and police pension schemes.”

Houston responded to the announcement by posting on LinkedIn: “Delighted to say that Jo Donnelly will be picking up the baton when I move into the (slightly scary) world of part retirement/part portfolio career on 1 April.”

Donnelly originally joined the LGA in 2021, having previously worked for the Treasury and Department of Health. A job advertisement for her current deputy secretary role was posted today (4 March).

Volatile stock markets ahead of US president Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ speech could weigh on asset price estimates for the LGPS triennial valuation.
