Rishi Sunak has reiterated the government’s commitment to levelling up, while admitting that the economic situation facing the country meant that “difficult decisions” will have to be made.
Making his first speech as prime minister, Sunak said he would deliver on the “promise” of the Conservative Party manifesto from 2019.
This included: “A stronger NHS, better schools, safer streets, control of our borders, protecting our environment, supporting our armed forces, levelling up and building an economy that embraces the opportunities of Brexit where businesses invest, innovate and create jobs.”
The PM said that he would place “economic stability and confidence at the heart of this government’s agenda”.
Sunak was involved in a levelling up row in August as part of his original campaign to win the Conservative Party leadership. He was filmed claiming that as chancellor he had started to change formulas so that towns like Tunbridge Wells received funding rather than “deprived urban areas”.
