Wyre Forest in out-of-borough property deal

Wyre Forest District Council says it will make an annual return of £28,000 on a £1.6m office purchase outside of its area in Bromsgrove.

The council has borrowed money from the Public Works Loan Board to fund the purchase of the two storey block, the third such purchase it has made this year.
Councillor Nathan Desmond, cabinet member for resources, said “The council has to close a £1.6m funding gap over the next few years.

“If we don’t do what many any other councils are doing and invest in property to produce a return, councillors will have to take difficult decisions such as making even deeper cuts in services that local people value.”

Room151’s head of research Dan Bates reflects on the ‘generally positive’ business rates technical consultation and sets out what will be needed in the upcoming summer consultation on funding reform.
