Three regions “subsidise” rest of UK

Only three regions in the UK raised more in tax than they spent on public services in 2016–17, according to the Office for National Statistics.

A study, which looked at all sources of tax revenue from income tax to council tax and business rates, found that the largest surplus was in London, which raised £32bn more than it spent. The South East and East of England were also in surplus. The largest deficit was in the North East, at £19bn.

Room151’s head of research Dan Bates reflects on the ‘generally positive’ business rates technical consultation and sets out what will be needed in the upcoming summer consultation on funding reform.
