Spending Review 2025: the ‘cavalry’ will not be coming for local government

With another tough budget-setting period nearly over for councils, some had hoped the next phase in 2026/27 would bring relief, with the government committing to multi-year settlements and a promised Spending Review, which is set to conclude in June 2025. However, sector professionals warned at the CIPFA South West conference in Plymouth that those hoping for more money are mistaken, with cuts expected.
