Powys passes budget

Powys County Council backed its budget at the second time of asking on 7 March, after initially rejecting it the previous week.

The budget had included an increase of 9.5% in council tax and a £12m cut to services.

The tax increase was voted through, but the cut to services was  softened at the margins by reducing a contribution to its reserves.

This has allowed the scrapping of a review which might have led to the closing of 10 libraries, and a proposal to charge blue badge holders for parking.

It has also given the council room to reduce an increase in the price of school meals from 20p to 15p.

The council was under pressure to approve its budget by 7 March for there to be time for council bills to be sent out in April.
