The financial challenges facing councils are to be investigated by MPs.
The impact of spending cuts imposed on local authorities by the government in the last Comprehensive Spending Review (CSR) will be subject to scrutiny by MPs on the housing, communities and local government committee.
It will deliver its findings as the Treasury begins its round of negotiations with Whitehall departments.
The CSR is usually set every three years and has been used to drive the austerity agenda that has delivered cuts of up to 40% to council budgets.
No date has been announced by the Treasury.
The committee will seek to clarify if austerity is over, especially in light of the recent announcement of more than £1bn for England’s poorest communities.
The committee is asking for submissions from local authorities detailing the financial impact of cuts.
The deadline is 17 April 2019.
A spokesman for the committee said: “Its special focus will be on how effective and fair the funding settlement is.
The report will look to inform the next government settlement.”
