The government should accelerate work on business rates retention and the Fair Funding Review to help councils with financial planning beyond 2019/20, according to the Local Government Association (LGA).
The call came in a list of asks produced by the LGA for next week’s Budget, to help local authorities deal with an estimated gap of £7.8bn in funding by 2024/25.
Other measures the LGA also wants to see include full funding to bridge the existing gaps of £1.5bn in adult social care in 2019/20 and £1.1bn in children’s services in 2019/2020.
It also said that the government should allow councils to raise planning fees by a further 20% and extend the two-year limit to spend the Apprenticeship Levy.
