Labour leaders slam Stronger Towns Fund

A group of 64 Labour council leaders have written to prime minister Theresa May criticising the government’s proposed Stronger Towns Fund.

The £1.6m fund was announced last week, aimed at creating employment, increasing training and skills, and boosting growth.

But a letter from the councillors pointed out that core funding for councils has been cut by almost £16bn in the past decade.

The leaders said they were “confused by the fact that Stronger Towns Fund allocations have been decided using deprivation as a factor, given your government’s plan to remove deprivation as a factor in deciding council funding.”

The government has launched a consultation on its proposed business rates reset, potentially leading to a significant redistribution of council funding.
