Councils receive cash to remove unsafe cladding

A dozen councils have received a share of £248m released by the government to remove unsafe cladding from social housing blocks.

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has announced that 12 councils and 31 housing associations have had bids approved, relating to 135 buildings.

A total of 12 applications  were rejected and officials have asked for more information on 12 others.

The money is the first tranche of funding released from the estimated £400 million announced by the Prime Minister earlier this year.

The government has launched a consultation on its proposed business rates reset, potentially leading to a significant redistribution of council funding.
