The government has launched a £7m pot of funding available to local authorities across England to find innovative ways to improve air quality in their areas.
The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs announced the funding on 26 July, which is part of its Air Quality Grant scheme.
Local authorities can bid for a portion of the fund for a wide range of projects to reduce the impact of air pollution on people’s health and create cleaner environments.
Steve Double, environment minister, said: “We have today opened applications for millions of pounds worth of additional funding for local authorities so they can take the action needed to cut air pollution and improve air quality awareness in their areas.
“Local authorities know their areas best, and we are excited to receive their ideas for innovative measures which will reduce the impact of air pollution on the health of their communities.”
This year’s grant will focus on projects that reduce air pollution where there are nitrogen dioxide exceedances, focus on improving public knowledge about air quality, and include measures to deal with particulate matter.
Since the Air Quality Grant scheme was established, it has awarded over £81m to a variety of innovative projects and is part of the wider UK plan to tackle roadside nitrogen dioxide concentrations.
Applications for the grant close on 23 September 2023.
