The average band D council tax set by local authorities in England for 2022-23 will be £1,966, according to a statistical release from the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities.
This figure, which does not take into account the £150 council tax rebate being given to households in bands A to D, is an increase of £67 or 3.5% on the average 2021-22 bill. It is the lowest increase in council tax since 2016-17.
Shire areas face the highest average bills (£2,041) followed by unitaries (£2,034), mets (£1,960) and London (£1,684).
Northumberland (unitary) has the highest band D council tax (including adult social care and parish precepts)) at £1,988. It is closely followed by Gateshead (met) at £1,972 and Rutland (unitary) at £1,968.
The council tax requirement in 2022-23 is £36.3bn, of which £408m (1.1%) will be raised through the adult social care precept and £655m (1.8%) will be raised through parish precepts.
