Seventy-five local authorities across England will be eligible for a share of £302m to create family hubs in their area as part of the government’s levelling up agenda.
Family hubs give parents advice on how to take care of their children and make sure they are safe and healthy, providing services including parenting and breastfeeding support.
Of the £302m, £100m will be for bespoke parent-infant relationship and perinatal mental health support, £82m for creating a network of family hubs, £50m to establish breastfeeding support services and £50m to fund evidence-based parenting programmes.
Will Quince, minister for children and families, said on Twitter that he was “looking forward to seeing this work in action across local authorities in the coming months”.
“Areas have been selected using data on family incomes and the proportion of children who might need that extra support. So the investment really goes where it is needed most.”
The government announcement – from both the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Department for Education – said that the 75 local authorities eligible for family hubs would be contacted and provided with further details on next steps.
Successful authorities include: Barking and Dagenham; Birmingham; Bolton; Gateshead; Kent; Luton; Plymouth; Sheffield; Stoke-on-Trent; Wakefield; and Wolverhampton. A full listing can be found here.
