The government’s planned three-year Comprehensive Spending Review is unlikely to take place this year, according to Liz Truss, chief secretary to the Treasury.
In May, Truss had said that the government was set to launch the review before the summer recess.
However, speaking before the House of Lords economic affairs committee, she said that the resignation of prime minister Theresa May is likely to delay that plan.
“The plan had been to launch the spending review and the zero-based capital review just before the summer recess.
“I would suggest that is unlikely to happen given the current timetable for the Conservative leadership election,” she said.
Delaying the review will mean councils are now likely only to find out how much money they will receive for one year.
