Haringey proposes council tax exemption for low-income families

London Borough of Haringey is to consult on proposals to take its poorest families out of paying council tax.

Currently working age beneficiaries of the council’s assistance scheme get a reduction of 80.2% on their tax.

But a new proposal could see beneficiaries with children given a complete exemption after councillors voted to concsult with residents about the proposal.

Cabinet member for finance Patrick Berryman, said: “Addressing the inequality in our borough was a key part of this new administration’s manifesto.

“The council tax reduction scheme proposals would reinstate essential support to some of our borough’s most vulnerable residents. I encourage everyone to have their say in our consultation.”

Council papers reveal that, if adopted, the move would cost £1.6m for the 2019–20 financial year.

The local government financial crisis has not been caused by a lack of funding: that’s just a symptom of the inherent conflict of having independent local authorities within a highly centralised state, argues Conrad Hall.
