Welsh audit uncovers £5.4m of fraud and overpayments

The Wales Audit Office has uncovered £5.4m of fraud and overpayments across public services in Wales in its National Fraud Initiative.

This is up from £4.4m the last time the exercise, which covers local authorities, police, fire and NHS bodies, was carried out two years ago.

Welsh auditor general, Adrian Crompton, said: “I am proud to support Welsh public bodies in their fight against fraud, as it’s not a victimless crime.

“When fraudsters claim for services and benefits they’re not entitled to, it means that those in genuine need may have to wait longer for services, treatments or help.

“Uncovering £5.4m in this latest NFI exercise is a considerable help to public services facing huge financial challenges.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
