Members of trade union Unison have voted by 63.5% to 36.5% to accept the national employers’ pay offer for local government employees in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
The employers offered a flat-rate pay rise of £1,925, which would give those at the bottom end of the pay scale a 10.5% increases and more than three-quarters of employees would get a 6% pay rise or more. All staff were also offered and an extra day’s holiday.
There are three recognised unions involved in the local government pay talks – Unison, the GMB and Unite. Unite’s ballot closes on 14 October and the GMB’s on 21 October.
Unison said it would await the results of the ballots held by the GMB and Unite, and the three unions would then agree a joint position.
The unions originally submitted a pay claim calling for a rise of £2,000 or RPI inflation, depending on whichever was the higher.
