State aid row over council stadium sale moves to Europe

The operators of Coventry’s Ricoh Arena have taken their complaint over the stadium’s sale to Premiership rugby club Wasps to the European Commission.

In April, owners Sisu saw the Supreme Court refuse to overturn a High Court decision last year not to permit a full judicial review into the sale.

Sisu claims Coventry City Council undervalued the stadium by £27m when it was sold to Premiership rugby club Wasps in 2014.

In a statement, Wasps chief executive Nick Eastwood, said: “We further understand that the basis of the complaint to the EU is very similar in all matters of substance to the recent court actions, questions those court decisions and seeks remedial action.”
