Southwark backs late night levy

London Borough of Southwark is set to boost income after approving a borough-wide late night levy.

The levy will be introduced from September on 439 licenced premises after midnight.

It has been introduced due to budget cuts to both the police and council.

Costs of policing after hours in the borough is £298,000 and the cost of council staff working at the same time is £40,000. The levy is projected to raise £419,000.

A report to councillors said: “Net monies raised by the levy after the payment of administration would be used as follows: to pay for the full costs of the police night time economy team; to pay for the council resources within the night time economy team; the surplus to be decided by a board made up of representatives for the council, police, licensed trade and residents.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
