Reading delays opening accounts again

Delays making accounts public are set to continue at Reading Borough Council.

The council admitted there would be a ‘short’ further delay that had been caused by signing off the 2016-17 accounts.

The council has a new finance team, brought in to strengthen audit controls, and they are currently going through statements from the previous year.

The current year’s accounts have been signed off, the council confirmed.

A council spokesman told Room151 “The 16/17 draft accounts have already been through a public inspection period.

“The 17/18 and 18/19 accounts will be published for inspection later this summer.

“We currently anticipate the 17/18 inspection period will begin in July and a notice will be put on the council’s web site later this month.

“The August accounts will follow.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
