MPs back business rates reform

Business rate reforms have passed their second reading in Parliament.

The Non-Domestic Rating (Lists) Bill is aimed at enabling more frequent revaluations in a bid to lower the number of appeals which currently have a backlog of more than 65,000 dating back to 2010.

Local government minister Rishi Sunak told MPs: “This Bill makes a major improvement to the rating system that delivers on Government commitments and addresses ratepayers’ concerns.

“It will ensure that business rates bills will be updated at more frequent revaluations to reflect changes to the rental property market.”
