Middlesbrough’s £30m deal cuts no ice

Opposition councillors have challenged a £30m deal aimed at keeping a leisure centre development on track.

Members of Middlesbrough Council will debate the deal struck with regeneration agency Homes England to buy the site at Middlehaven which will then be sold on a developer which plans to build Subzero, an indoor ski centre and leisure park.

Opposition councillors say the initial report failed to detail where the £30m would come from.

Plans for the development, part of an ambitious £700m regeneration programme were given the go-ahead in October last year.

At the time, Tees Valley region mayor Ben Houchen said: “I have backed this project with serious investment from the Tees Valley Combined Authority and I believe it has a great deal to offer potential investors and operators.”
