Herts leader defends art sale

Hertfordshire County Council has defended the sale of a third of its art collection.

Earlier this year, the council sold at auction more than 450 items from the collection for £469,282. It left 200 items, including work by Henry Moore, which the council says will displayed properly.

MPs had complained the sale had set a dangerous precedent for councils but Hertfordshire’s leader, David Williams, said: “This has led to some difficult decisions but will ultimately improve the access to the collection and investment in both nationally significant and locally significant works that will remain within our care.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
