Government launches HRA cap consulation

The government has launched a consultation on a determination that would revoke the current cap on housing revenue account borrowing limits.

Prime minister Theresa May announced that the government would lift the cap at the Conservative Party conference at the beginning of the month.

Councils have now been given a week to comment on the determination, which would revoke previous determinations specifying each council’s limits on indebtedness.

Further details on the removal of the cap are set to be announced in the Budget on 29 October.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
