DCLG permanent secretary Melanie Dawes leads speakers at FD’s Summit

Melanie Dawes, permanent secretary at the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG), will be a keynote speaker at this year’s  Room151 FD’s Summit, which runs alongside LATIF2017.

Dawes will open the FD’s Summit strand of the conference on September 14 at the London Stock Exchange. She joined DCLG in March 2015 after four years in the Cabinet Office where she was director general for the Economic and Domestic Affairs Secretariat, responsible for overseeing Cabinet decision making.

Luke Webster, chief investment officer at Greater London Authority, will chair morning sessions at the Summit while Prof Tony Travers of the London School of Economics will oversee proceedings in the afternoon.

Keynote on the LATIF stream will be Lord Bob Kerslake, a former head of the home civil service as well as having also served as permanent sectary at DCLG. Lord Kerslake is now a cross-bench peer in the House of Lords.

Tim Seagrave, head of treasury at Manchester City Council, will be at LATIF to explore the future strategic direction of local government treasury while Hetal Mehta, senior European economist at Legal and General Investment Management, has joined the conference panel exploring Brexit, bull runs and bubbles.

Local government finance directors and treasurers can register for a free place online, subject to availability.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
