Councils to receive extra £263m to tackle homelessness

The government has announced £263m for local authorities to support people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

Councils will be able to use the funding to employ specialists to provide advice to vulnerable people and help find long-term stable accommodation, the government said.

Prime minister Boris Johnson said: “This new funding is going to help councils provide better support to homeless people, and importantly, prevent people from becoming homeless in the first place.”

A government statement said £200m will be made available through the Flexible Homelessness Support Grant, with the remaining £63m available through the Homelessness Reduction Grant.

The government also confirmed the Cold Weather Fund will receive an additional £3m, taking the total to £13m, to enhance support available for rough sleepers during the winter period.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
