Councils’ borrowing surplus falls

Local government borrowed £2.9bn more than it spent in 2017/18, according to figures released by the Office for National Statistics.
The statistics authority said that the figure was down from the £6bn surplus the previous year.
Overall public sector net debt was £39bn during the last year, £6.3bn less than in the previous financial year and £5.8bn less than the Office for Budget Responsibility expected.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
