Council tax fraud rises by 22%

Council tax fraud rose by 22% during the last financial year, according to figures from the Chartered Institute of Public Finance and Accountancy.

CIPFA’s 2019 Fraud and Corruption Tracker revealed the number of cases rose from 57,894 in 2017/18 to 71,000 last year.

Meanwhile, business rate fraud fell from £10m to £8m over the period.

Rob Whiteman, CIPFA chief executive, said: “The sector is moving in the right direction, but only a greater focus on collaboration and preventative measures will help create long-lasting change.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
