Consultation opens into care charging reforms

The government has opened a consultation into the social care charging reforms that are due to be implemented from October 2023.

The consultation seeks views on the government’s proposals, including plans for an £86,000 cap on care costs and an extension of the means test whereby the upper capital limit will increase to £100,000 and the lower capital limit to £20,000.

Excluded from the scope of the consultation are the “Fair Cost of Care” proposals, which aim to address a systemic problem that has seen people who fund their own care having to pay more than councils do for those who are eligible for public funding.

Responses can be made to the consultation until 23 September. The government said that it would then review the responses and would confirm its approach by the 2023-2024 local government settlement at the latest.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
