Levelling up secretary Michael Gove has agreed to a request from commissioners at Liverpool City Council to delay their next progress report by two months.
Lead commissioner Mike Cunningham wrote a letter to Gove on 20 April 2022 requesting the extension from April to June 2022. He confirmed that Liverpool had developed plans to address some of the challenges it faced, but added that “delivery of these plans is at risk”.
“As well as prioritisation, we need to see more urgency from the council on key elements of the transformation. Over the next two months we expect to be in a better position to judge the efficacy of these plans, and therefore be able to provide a more holistic view of the council’s improvement journey,” he wrote.
Cunningham said that even with the extension, the commissioners will have delivered two reports on Liverpool City Council within one year.
In his response, published today (4 May 2022), Gove agreed to the request, adding: “It is crucial that you are able to fully assess Liverpool City Council’s ability to rise to the transformation and delivery challenges that they face.”
