Caller and Whiteman to advise council on improvements

Two senior local figures in local government finance have been appointed to Birmingham City Council’s new governance structures.

Max Caller, led a team of commissioners sent in to help Northamptonshire County Council out of its financial difficulties, will be joined by CIPFA chief executive Rob Whiteman as non-executive advisors to the authority.

Along with three other non-exec advisors, they will challenge the council to improve in key areas.

The new model has been instituted following the Kerslake Review of the council’s governance arrangements which took place in 2014.

Leader of Birmingham City Council Ian Ward said: “I’m really looking forward to working with the non-executive advisors, all of whom have a great deal of experience in their particular fields.”

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
