Bidding opened for 10 ‘freeports’

Shipping and airport hubs around the UK have been urged to bid for post-EU tax breaks.

The government announced a competition for airports and sea ports to become one of ten new “freeports”.

The controversial hubs could have fewer checks, lower planning standards and get tax breaks.

The government argues the hubs would boost business, particularly manufacturing but critics have warned they could also become centres for tax avoidance and money laundering.

Until recently, the FRC had little involvement in local government affairs. But with investigations into council officers becoming more frequent, where is the political accountability?
